Description

Hidden gem located near Jongno 3-ga Station and Nakwon Music Arcade in Jongno, Seoul! If you see a sign that reads “Jongno Jjigae Maeul” (with jjigae written a bit differently as “찌게”), you’ve found the right place. This cozy restaurant specializes in dishes made with fresh cod and cod heads, especially their signature Bboljjim (braised cod head). The interior is humble, and each table accommodates up to four people, making it perfect for a small group. The basic side dishes are neatly set: cubed radish kimchi (kkakdugi), stir-fried fish cake, steamed egg, pickled garlic, wasabi, and soy sauce. Their Daegu Tang (cod soup) 🫕 comes loaded with plump cod meat, topped generously with chili peppers, water parsley, and garlic. Once the dish arrives, let it simmer on the table a little longer—this deepens the flavor beautifully. Although the broth looks clear, the taste is surprisingly spicy and full of umami. Inside, you’ll find tofu and a variety of vegetables, giving each spoonful different textures. The cod itself is tender and mild, but dipping it into soy sauce with a hint of wasabi takes it to the next level. The star of the show, however, is Algoni Bokkeum 🍚 — stir-fried cod head meat, roe, and intestines in a savory red sauce. As the name suggests, it’s the ultimate rice thief — so flavorful it’s addictive. The intestines have a pleasantly soft texture and aren’t too spicy, while the roe pops satisfyingly in your mouth. Beneath everything is a bed of bean sprouts, topped with thick pieces of cod infused with sesame oil, reminiscent of agujjim (braised monkfish). Algoni Bokkeum pairs wonderfully with rice for a hearty meal, or with drinks as a perfect side dish.
