Description
This noodle house in Dongdaemun-gu is famous for its chicken kalguksu, but today’s highlight is their Chogye Noodles. When you’re seated, you’ll first get an empty plate—transfer as much kimchi as you’d like. After all, noodles and crunchy kimchi are a perfect match. Chogye Noodles are a chilled dish that originated from the royal cuisine Chogyetang during the Joseon Dynasty. They’re made with chicken broth, vinegar, and tender chicken. The bowl comes topped with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and a variety of ingredients. Mix everything well with the noodles, and you’ll be rewarded with chewy strands in icy broth, brightened by tangy vinegar and sharp mustard flavors. With a good amount of chicken, it’s refreshing yet filling—perfect for summer. Another must-try is the Potato Seafood Pancake. Made by adding potato to the batter, this savory pancake pairs wonderfully with cold Chogye Noodles. Tear off a piece and you’ll notice its chewy texture; bite in and you’ll taste the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft inside. The subtle potato flavor and seafood aroma, especially from shrimp, linger pleasantly. Try it plain first, then with onions or dipping sauce for extra layers of flavor. It’s not fancy, but it’s the kind of dish that brings back memories. While cold noodles like naengmyeon or kongguksu often come to mind in summer, few dishes are as refreshing as Chogye Noodles. Thanks to its university-town location, prices are reasonable—but note that each person must order at least one menu item.
